What’s in a grain of salt? What if I told you the power to naturally rejuvenate your skin? I know that is a big statement, let me explain.
I’m always on the hunt for the next big skincare solution and get downright giddy when that miracle ingredient can be found in a grocery store. Not all salt is created equal, and for maximum benefits in your beauty routine, you’ll want to use sea salt. Sea salt is loaded with beneficial minerals like magnesium, calcium, potassium, and the list goes on – all of which are vital to maintain your skin’s mineral balance and keep your skin hydrated and glowing. Read on for salon and DIY at-home therapy options to build this into your beauty routine.
SaltFacial™ Skin Renewal Therapy
Services I received from Sherif Zaki Salon and Spa were provided complimentary in exchange for my honest review. All opinions and thoughts are my own and reflect an honest account of my results.
I recently had the opportunity to have an organic SaltFacial™ Skin Renewal Therapy at Sherif Zaki Salon & Oasis Spa in Wilmington, DE. This is no ordinary “scrub the salt on the skin” exfoliation, but truly a skin therapy. Sherif Zaki Salon is one of the first salons to bring this patented system to the east coast and the only location in Delaware. The treatment involves 3 steps: Restore (Exfoliation), Replenish (Ultrasound), and Rejuvenate (LED Light Therapy). Read on, or better yet, watch the video!
Fun fact: My esthetician was also the videographer at my wedding! If you ever find yourself at Sherif Zaki, ask for Melissa Costantino!
This part is so hard to put into words, but essentially, a handheld tool attached to a giant machine exfoliates your skin while the salt crystals work on gently removing the top layer of your skin. I can’t say this feels relaxing and you’ll hear me describe it more in the video, but I don’t think any exfoliation ever is. I was nervous about this part because as I’ve mentioned many times before in posts and on social media, I have extremely sensitive skin. I can barely get facials anymore because I inevitably walk out with some kind of allergic reaction. I talked to the esthetician and she assured me that this was safe and effective for all skin types. Spoiler alert – no allergic reaction!
This is where the therapy starts to get relaxing. Hyaluronic acid is applied to the skin and a low-frequency handheld ultrasound machine is used to work the acid deep into your skin tissue. Anything with the word acid immediately sounds scary to me and not something I want to put on my face, but it is actually a hidden gem in the skin care community and one that I think you’ll continue to hear more and more about. Hyaluronic acid is naturally produced by the body and present in your skin, your joints, and throughout your body tissue and contributes towards helping you retain collagen. For this reason, it is an ingredient readily used in anti-aging products for its moisturizing and wrinkle-reducing properties. Bring on the acid!
This part was… trippy. With blackout goggles on, you lay under a large wrap-around panel of Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights. We are talking 1000+ lights and with goggles on and eyes closed it is still so bright. As time goes on and your eyes adjust it starts to change colors and it’s a super fun and relaxing kaleidoscope experience. Is this even safe? What about UV light? I had a lot of questions about this part of the procedure. Turns out – it is safe! The red light therapy used as part of this procedure runs at a wavelength outside of the UV range (read: it is UV free). The procedure ends with light therapy to help reduce the appearance of fine lines, calm redness in the skin, improve uneven skin tone, and in general, give you a healthy glow.
I was surprised to see immediate results and improved results over the next 3 days or so. My skin had a dew-like glow to it and just felt very plump. I also noticed the hyperpigmentation (patches of dark skin) around my mouth were just a tiny bit lighter. You can see for yourself. Looking at it again, I can actually see my freckles are all a bit lighter. You can also really clearly see from the photos that all my freckles were lighter. Needless to say, I was really impressed with the results.
How Often and How Much
For best results, you will want to do a package of five treatments completed approximately every two weeks and then going into a maintenance mode. However, you can see from my results, you can very easily also just a get one-time treatment if you’ve got a special event coming up. Single treatments options will run you about $200 with the cost per treatment decreasing when bundled in a package.
DIY Salt Scrub / Mask
If you can’t get to the salon, but want to incorporate salt into your beauty routine, give this at-home salt scrub a try. You can use this on both your face and your body. Feel free to either exfoliate and rinse away the scrub or keep it on for 10-20 minutes to be used more like a mask. Combine the ingredients below in a single bowl and mix them together by hand. Double or triple the recipe if you want to make it for more than just one use.
You know what’s awesome? You can eat this mask! If you can safely put it in your body, it is definitely safe enough to put on your body! Plus, if you don’t already have these ingredients in your cupboard, you won’t feel guilty buying them. Whatever you don’t use for this recipe you can eat.
