What happened when a a computer scientist, an engineer, and a cosmetic chemist joined forces? Function of Beauty was born! Function of Beauty is focused on creating shampoos and conditioners that are personalized and tailored to your unique hair profile and hair goals. These shampoos and conditioners are Sulfate Free, Paraben Free, Phthalates Free, Cruelty Free, and best of all Made in the USA. They are very transparent about the ingredients in your products, and if you want it, will even send you a listing of all the ingredients in your specific formula before you purchase. All you have to do is send them your completed survey. How did I discover Function of Beauty? How I discover all great things – late night Facebook scrolling! If you like what you read, click the link at the bottom of the post for $5 off your first order! Here’s how it works. I highlighted the selections I made for my own formulation.
Build your hair profile.
I love that they ask about your scalp! Too often Sodium Lauryl Sulfates (SLS), the stuff that makes your shampoo sudsy, and is present in many mainstream shampoos is actually very drying for your hair and scalp. So not only does this not contain SLS, but they will ensure your scalp gets the moisture it needs!
Select your hair goals.
Have you ever tried asking your significant other what their hair goals are? Try it – and without any context. It’s hilarious. You can select up to 5 goals and as you add each one, you’ll notice a listing of ingredients appears to let you know exactly what is being added to the formula to accomplish that hair goal.
The fun stuff.
Although you can personalize both the shampoo and conditioner, I opted for dye free. Please be aware that the dye colors are artificial and synthetically created. While I think this is adorable, there is really no need for the color and my motto when it comes to ingredients is always that less is more. The same thing goes for the scents. With the exception of the essential oil scent, the other scents are artificial and synthetically created. The essential oil blend smells incredible. Trust me – get that one! You guys – they put your name on the bottle! Does it get any more personalized than that?! I did give them some feedback on the bottle lettering. When you select the dye free versions of the shampoo and conditioner, the formula is white, the bottle is white, and the lettering on the bottle is white. It’s a bit hard to see and a little confusing when you’re in the shower until you get used to which bottle is which.
Size and frequency.
Do you always run out of conditioner faster than you run out of shampoo? Function of Beauty has you covered! You can order varying sized bottles or even just a shampoo or conditioner alone. Once you try this once, I know you’ll be hooked and you can set the shampoo and conditioner to ship on a set frequency for 10% off your order.
As a cost comparison I used my previous Acure Shampoo/Conditioner and BeautyCounter Shampoo/Conditioner.
- 8oz. Acure Shampoo and 8oz. Conditioner ($19)
- 8oz. Function of Beauty Shampoo and 8oz. Conditioner ($36) – The larger bottles are obviously a better deal per ounce.
- 10oz. BeautyCounter Shampoo and 8oz. Conditioner ($48)
Your order is produced, packaged, and sent to you! Can you believe there are over 12 billion different combinations that can be produced based on the unique inputs in the survey? So cool!
The good: Customized. Focused on non-toxic ingredients and transparency in ingredients. Makes your hair feel amazingly soft! Price – middle of the road for high quality shampoo and always free shipping. Full refund within 30 days if you aren’t completely happy.
The bad: Artificial and synthetically created dye and scents (excluding the essential oil scent). No option for scent-free. Hard to read bottle when dye free option is selected.
